Skin and Coat Supplements for Cats: A Label-Reading Checklist

par Kriath Pet Team sur Oct 12, 2026
Skin and Coat Supplements for Cats: A Label-Reading Checklist

Choosing a skin and coat supplement for your cat involves more than finding a bottle with a cat on the front. Species suitability, the complete ingredient list, serving information and feeding directions all deserve a closer look.

Use this checklist to compare products and prepare questions for your veterinarian. It is a buying guide—not a recommendation that every cat needs a supplement.

1. Start with your cat's regular diet

A supplement does not replace an appropriate complete and balanced diet. The FDA explains that the “complete and balanced” claim relates to a food's nutritional adequacy for its intended life stage.

The Cornell Feline Health Center notes that cats eating a complete and balanced diet usually do not need additional supplements, and recommends veterinary approval before using them. More vitamins and minerals are not automatically better.

Before shopping, tell your veterinarian what your cat already eats, including treats and any other supplements. Ask whether an additional product has a clear purpose for your cat.

2. Confirm that the product is intended for cats

Look for explicit cat suitability on the label and in the feeding directions. A product labeled for dogs is not automatically appropriate for cats, and a dog's serving amount is not a cat's serving amount.

For a dogs-and-cats formula, check the full instructions rather than relying only on the product name. If the species, age restrictions or instructions are unclear, ask the manufacturer or your veterinarian before use. Do not assume that a cat-compatible adult formula is also suitable for kittens.

3. Read the complete formula, not just the headline ingredient

Review both the listed nutritional ingredients and the other ingredients, such as flavorings or the capsule shell. Bring the full label to your veterinarian if your cat has dietary restrictions or takes medication.

For an oil-based product, look for the amounts of EPA and DHA when they are provided. Do not assume that a number describing total fish oil is also the amount of EPA and DHA, or fill in amounts that the label does not state.

A tablet may contain several different ingredients. Compare the complete formula rather than treating it as interchangeable with a fish oil softgel. An ingredient name alone is not evidence that the finished product will deliver a particular result for your cat.

4. Separate serving size from daily feeding directions

Check what the ingredient quantities refer to: one tablet, two tablets, one softgel or a stated volume of liquid. Compare products on that same basis.

The serving size used to report ingredient amounts is not, by itself, an instruction to give that amount every day. Read the feeding directions separately and follow the final product label and your veterinarian's advice.

If a weight range or unit is ambiguous, ask for clarification rather than guessing. For liquids, use the specified measuring device; do not assume that a dropper or pump from another bottle delivers the same volume.

For a liquid example, see the real marked-dropper demonstration for Kriath Collagen Liquid for Dogs & Cats. Use the directions for your own bottle and pet, not the liquid level shown in the video.

5. Choose a format you can use as directed

Liquids, softgels and tablets differ in how they are measured and offered. No format is automatically the best choice for every cat.

Check whether the specific product can be mixed with food or needs another method of administration. Do not split, crush or open a tablet or softgel unless its instructions or your veterinarian confirm that this is appropriate.

For fish oil specifically, VCA Animal Hospitals advises careful measurement of liquids and consultation about other medicines and supplements. It also describes possible adverse effects. Do not assume that a nutritional product is risk-free because it is marketed as natural.

6. Compare cat-compatible products with the checklist

Browse the Kriath Cats collection and check each product’s instructions. Examples of different formats to compare include:

  • Delightful Coat Skin & Coat Tablets for Cats: a cat-specific tablet format. Review its complete formula and final feeding directions.
  • Omega-3 Fish Oil Softgels for Dogs & Cats: a dogs-and-cats softgel format. Check the listed amounts and species-appropriate instructions before use.
  • Kriath Collagen Liquid for Dogs & Cats: a liquid format with a marked dropper. Review the complete formula and weight-based feeding directions. This is the Dogs & Cats formula, not the dog-only Collagen 3X product.

These links are product information, not a claim that every formula is suitable for every cat or that these products should be used together. Avoid stacking products without discussing the combined ingredients with your veterinarian.

Before buying: confirm cat suitability, check the entire formula, identify the serving basis, read the actual feeding directions and ask about compatibility with your cat's current diet and care plan.

This article provides general label-reading information and is not veterinary advice. Do not use a supplement as a substitute for an assessment of a skin or coat concern. Consult your veterinarian before introducing a new product.
